That offers an opportunity to balance our minds and emotions, our body and spirit. You connect to the vibrations and tap into that energy. When everyone tunes in with this rhythm, you connect to the harmony. It reminds us of the most important thing. She asks about where they are now, we talk about what we're scared of. The fact that my daughter helps decorate her grandmothers altar gives us an opportunity for me to tell her stories about them. If we can take anything away as Americans from this spiritual tradition, I hope that it allows people to connect to those who are no longer with us. Mexican culture has a much different, more intimate and less fearful relationship to death than American culture. Which brings me to my favorite part of this tradition, celebrating death. With these orange flowers scattered all over white shrines, lit up in candles, a burial place all of a sudden glows brightly, lifting the spirits of all who gaze upon it. Typically, grave sites and cemeteries in Mexico are always painted white. The flower of Dia de Los Muertos is the Marigold or cempasuchil. Finally, like most altars for the dead, we decorate them with flowers.

One of Wang’s highest-profile recent projects involves a portable device that can rapidly confirm an infection with gonorrhea - and identify within 15 minutes whether the gonorrhea will respond to traditional antibiotics. To translate his lab’s technologies into real-world clinical progress, Wang has built collaborations with a broad team of physicians and epidemiologists at Johns Hopkins and beyond. You have resolution even down to the single-cell level. You have precise temporal and spatial control. “With microfluidics,” Wang says, “you can control the microenvironments you want to look at. And because some of these devices have the potential to be cheap and portable, they might transform health care in low-resource countries that have few traditional hospital laboratories. Over the last decade, Wang’s lab has developed devices that might someday make it far easier for clinicians to identify infectious pathogens and to diagnose early-stage cancers. Why would anyone want to isolate such minute volumes of fluid? Because microfluidics, as Wang’s field is known, allows rapid, precise analysis of many kinds of biological processes. Others use a far smaller scale: one-trillionth of a liter. Some of his lab’s devices analyze droplets that are one-millionth of a liter. DC-SIGN targets amphotericin B-loaded liposomes to diverse pathogenic fungi.Tza-Huei (Jeff) Wang spends his days working with tiny droplets of fluid.

The Ryzen 5 has a default TDP of 15 W (also known as the long-term power limit), a value that laptop manufacturers are free to set to anything between 12 W and 35 W with clock speeds and performance changing accordingly as a result. The average 3500U in our database matches Intel Core i7-1065G7 in multi-thread performance to be an OK lower mid-range option for thinner, lighter laptops and truly small mini-PCs. As the features of the Picasso APUs are the same compared to the Raven Ridge predecessors, we point to our Raven Ridge launch article. The integrated dual-channel memory controller supports up to DDR4-2400 memory. Furthermore, the 12 nm process allows for higher clocks at similar power consumption. The Picasso SoC uses the Zen+ microarchitecture with slight improvements that should lead to a 3% IPS (performance per clock) improvements. In Chromebooks, AMD calles the APU AMD Ryzen 5 3500C, but the specifications (and performance) are the same. Specified at 15 Watt TDP, the SoC is intended for thin mid-range laptops. It’s better then Dreamweaver in creating powerful sites without any knowledge at all of the underlying technologies, but if you can’t get it exactly right, you’ll have to resort to hand-coding outside Freeway. I would say Freeway 5 Pro os aimed at beginning web designers and more experienced web designers, but not the experts who are capable of programming AJAX and other niceties into their web sites. The experienced designer can use Freeway 5 Pro for prototyping purposes, though. My opinion is that prototyping in Freeway is very effective as it has such low knowledge requirements that it almost hurts.įor example, take the Scriptaculous Actions in Freeway 5 Pro. These contain Combo FX, Attention FX, and Sound FX. These Actions allow you to apply effects such as Blind Up and Down, Slide Up and Down, Fade In and Fade Out, Pulsate, Shake and Highlight to items on a page. The Sound FX Action allows you to make an item in Freeway trigger or stop a sound, which is useful for providing feedback on links or buttons, or using custom graphics for audio files.įreeway 5 Pro is Excellent for Creating Web Sites FastEven if you know how to use these effects outside Freeway, it’s probably faster to do it inside Freeway as it literally involves no more than a couple of clicks. I can create a CSS-styled web page in a couple of hours, but even in Dreamweaver I know it’s going to cost me “a couple of hours” at least because I’m not an expert. In my own web coding toolbox, there are Coda (courtesy Panic Software - excellent source coding environment, and better than TextMate, which I also use but not to its fullest as I can’t program) and CSSEdit (the best CSS editor out there). I use Dreamweaver when I’m lazy and I don’t want to think what the exact code for some lesser used element was. But when I want to have clean code with CSS elements already in place and Javascript eye-candy all set up for me, I use Freeway. To me, the things that speak in favour of Freeway - and now even more in the new version - are not just the ease-of-use and the concept that makes web page design strongly resemble layout design. Rather, I’m enchanted by the large number of included Actions, which now also include shopping cart functionality, Google, Analytics, Maps and AdSense capabilities, and for example even something silly like the Country list that you can simply drop in a form. The graphics capabilities of Freeway 5 Pro have been improved and enhanced to a point where I see little reason to use other programs, especially with the built-in access to iPhoto catalogues. The CSS capabilities are impressive because you can draw the elements and not worry about the code.įreeway 5 Pro also has its limitations, and you may find these annoying or not, depending on what you want to use the program for. If you have an existing web site and want to import the code, Freeway 5 Pro may be of help or not it will depend on your code. I found Freeway 5 Pro to have problems with web pages that refer to external CSS files. If no expression is provided, all rows of the data set will be searched (equivalent to the expression, TRUE). select-row? - An optional Yes/No expression, evaluated for each row of the data set, that returns TRUE or FALSE indicating whether the row should be included ( TRUE) or excluded ( FALSE) in the search for the maximum value.column - Name of the column of the named data set in which to find the maximum value, as a literal Text value (quoted or unquoted) may not be an expression.dataset - Name of the table or slice (the "data set") to search as a literal Text value (quoted or unquoted) may not be an expression. To access columns outside the row being considered, such as when using MAXROW() from within a column constraint, app formula, initial value, or format rule, reference the external column using _THISROW: MAXROW("Events", "Date", ( =. Spats_buttons (contains two identical pieces)ġ - No supports are required. Two pieces contain built-in supports and/or braces, jacket and hat_brim. Optional parts without the built-in support and braces are also supplied if you want to use your slicer supports. The built-in supports and braces are designed for a. 4mm nozzle and for the size that the model is presented. Use your discretion for which parts to use if you resize the model significantly.Ģ - There are some pieces that may need brims or rafts, use your discretion. When setting up my prints I prefer to be conservative to ensure the least chance of a print failure, especially since the base of many parts are hidden when inserted into another part. umbrella tip (I printed the tip and the spats_buttons at the same time to allow the tip some cooling time between layers)ģ - When removing parts from the printer bed, it's a VERY good idea to place left/right parts into separate containers to help with the assembly process.Ĥ - Your colors most likely will vary from mine, especially the green. I look forward to seeing the colors makers will choose.ġ - Take your time gluing the model together and enjoy the process. Give some thought into which parts to glue together as groups and then gluing the groups together. Let the glue for each group set completely before combining groups.Ģ - I used 3D Gloop and E6000 to put this model together. I am not affiliated with 3D Gloop but have experimented with different glues for my models and have found that this glue is a great option for my models. Each type of glue has different pros/cons and I found that 3D Gloop was far easier to use than superglue (for me). The E6000 sticky glue that I also use allows more time to position parts and is still the best for smaller parts. 3D Gloop covers the middle ground for me and really works wonders. It leaves enough time to set, so parts can be positioned correctly and it dries fast enough to hold awkward parts without the need for taping. I used the PLA version that comes in a tube. For both glues using a smaller amount is usually better than more glue.ģ - I glued the hat pieces together and the right hand and arm together. The hand should be positioned with the flat portion of the thumb fully touching the underside of the brim, and the hand positioned (mostly) against the flat part of the brim for maximun gluing surface.Ĥ - I put the model together and the umbrella separately. Depending on how the right had is positioned (there is a small bit of leeway), the umbrella tip may be a tad too long and may need to be slightly shortened to ensure the model fully sits flat.ĥ - Refer to the assembly diagrams in the pictures section as well as the uploaded pictures for putting the model together. Most other writing apps charge less for their desktop editions, but more for their mobile apps. It has many of the same tools as Final Draft, including index cards, collaboration, and the ability to upload PDFs of scripts and have them converted to an editable script form. Similar to Final Draft, Fade In focuses on screenplay writing. Frankly, it's more expensive than any other writing app I've reviewed.įade In, for example, costs only $79.95, and it's available for all major platforms and Linux. How Does Final Draft's Price Compare?įinal Draft's $249 sticker price might induce sticker shock for some. It's worth adding the mobile app if you're the type of writer who prefers to jot down ideas and notes directly into your scripts rather than in a separate note-taking app. The iPad and iPhone apps sell separately, and you can access your scripts through it when you save them to Dropbox or iCloud (you can also get them via email, which is a less elegant solution). If you buy the app, you get a license code via email that you enter the next time you launch it. You can install Final Draft and try it for 30 days without providing a credit card. You buy the software once and own it for life, though you will have to pay for upgrades once every few years if you want them. Mind you, these are one-time fees and not recurring subscription costs. Additionally, there are discounts for students, and sometimes the app goes on sale for around $199. The desktop software is not cheap, but the good news is that with a purchase, you can install Final Draft on two machines. I tested this feature and it worked very well, with only minimal cleanup needed.įinal Draft is available for macOS and Windows ($249), with a version called Final Draft Mobile available as an iPad app and an iPhone app (both for $9.99). When you upload PDFs of screenplays and other scripts, Final Draft interprets the formatting, too. The PDF import tool lets you upload a PDF and convert it to editable text. It works much like other apps that offer Track Changes, with different colors tracking changes of different collaborators, the ability to accept and reject changes individually or globally, and so forth. Track Changes primarily makes the collaboration options in Final Draft better. Focus Mode lets you minimize distractions while working on your script. Three features worth highlighting are 1) Focus Mode, 2) Track Changes, and 3) a PDF import tool. (Opens in a new window) What's New in Final Draft 12?Īs of version 12, Final Draft has a few new and noteworthy features, as well as significant improvements to the Beat Board, ScriptNotes, and the Outline Editor. Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. When you need help organizing and formatting large amounts of content, however, Final Draft, Scrivener, and Ulysses are the best writing apps on the market. Beyond those, there are wonderful, inexpensive writing apps that are perfectly suitable for shorter and less structured content, such as articles and marketing copy. Our favorites among them are Scrivener, which is available for both Windows and macOS and the Mac-only Ulysses. If you're not primarily a screenwriter, other apps are worth investigating because they have some advantages for novelists and book authors. Final Draft is a PCMag Editors' Choice winner for screenwriting software and one of the best apps for writers in general. Among writing apps, Final Draft is one of the most expensive products you can buy, but it's worth the price and sells for a one-time fee rather than as a recurring subscription. A Beat Board feature replicates the old notecard approach to arranging scenes, and a Story Map helps keep the story on target for pacing and script length. It compiles lists of characters and scene locations automatically. The app has smart auto-suggestions for formatting your work to industry standards. Stan Lee, perhaps the most famous comic book writer and illustrator, is worth an estimated $40 million, according to Wealth-X. In many cases, you’ll make far more than the executive salaries at the biggest comic book publishers. And it it becomes very lucrative if you retain the ownership rights to that work. Comic Book Creatorįor many comic hopefuls, the ultimate achievement is to create an entire comic book franchise. Here's what you can truly expect to make in a comic book career. “Afternoons, evenings, nights and weekends were comics,” Garron says of his 10-year odyssey to break through in the industry. Javier Garron, the Marvel artist behind Secret Warriors, worked as an architect before switching to comics. It’s an industry that lends itself to freelancers and those with raw talent. that offers a three-year training program.īut for every successful comic book writer or illustrator who acquired a formal education, there are many more who broke into the industry by themselves. However, if you don’t want the college experience, the Kubert School is a trade school in Dover, N.J. Other schools that comic book artists seem to gravitate towards include Ringling College of Art and Design and Rhode Island School of Design. Marvel artist Irene Strychalski recently told attendees of New York Comic Con she majored in sequential art and minored in animation at Savannah College of Art and Design. Like any career in the arts, you can get started in the industry by going to school to and majoring in something that translates well into this world, like animation, sequential art, or illustration. So how do you get started in this type of career? And more importantly, what does it pay? Print isn’t dead to this world - the industry makes $800 million-a-year annually and employs tens of thousands to do so. Between the video above with some verbal advice, and the sample that you can print and hand to students, you will mostly likely have all your bases covered.Marvel and DC Comics are once again facing off in an epic box-office duel this month, with the release of Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League - two superhero films that, of course, have their roots in the comic book industry. It not only includes all the blank templates that you see in my video, it has my entire 6-page sample “The Time I Lost a Dog” available as a download too. If you’d like some print-friendly help though, I’ve collected all my guides and templates in my “Make Your Own Comic Book” ebook available in my PDF Shop. If you are just looking for ideas, it might be all you need to get started. I then broke it into steps, and then proceeded to draw all the panels that I needed. That’s a whole lot of learning for one classroom project! Some simple typography lessons are even possible, if students think about how to express emotions with the size and look of their letters. It also will mostly likely stretch their drawing skills at the same time. The mere process of putting one together encourages them to think carefully about a storyline. It’s easy to see why classroom teachers might want their students to learn how to make a Comic Book.
Matrix Partners’ David Skok points out pricing strategies also need to consider the ‘ depth of usage’. It’s more than just the number of users, though. Obviously, there’s a significant difference between your resources supporting 26 users, versus 100 users. Let’s say a business offers three levels, with a published price at the top level for, say, 25+ users. Businesses that offer tiered pricing already ascribe to this reasoning. SaaS pricing isn’t a one-size-fits-all venture. However, there are even more compelling reasons a business may opt not to publish its enterprise pricing. On the surface, one reason businesses choose not to publish prices is because they don’t want their competitors to get wind of that information. Smith’s hope is that by sharing information on business pricing, the industry will be encouraged to provide more concise prices.īut others argue publishing prices isn’t always beneficial, and they promote a more bespoke pricing strategy. The business is in the process of compiling ‘ pricing stories’. Capiche CEO Austin Smith recently closed on a $450,000 angel funding round to facilitate better pricing transparency for software companies. The drive toward transparency inspired one company, in particular. It’s a good rule to be as explicit as you can with what things cost and how you got to those prices.” Showing your prices inspires consumer confidence, he explained. Transparency is integral, Patrick Moorehead agreed in an AiThority article. “Customers who see plans listed as ‘call for pricing’ may think, ‘If I have to ask, I probably can’t afford it.’ This isn’t a model for customer growth…” “Price is often the first thing a customer will look at when weighing their software options,” he wrote. Vijay Sundaram voiced his concerns about not publishing prices in a article. Business trends are moving toward transparency, meaning the best way to demonstrate your trustworthiness to customers is by letting them see valuable components, including pricing. Some influencers insist publishing prices is the only way to go. According to the company’s findings, “close to 80% of all websites displayed the highest package cost as ‘Contact Us’, rather than provide an actual figure.” Transparent pricingīrandMentions is a tool businesses can use to monitor social media and uncover what’s being said online about their brand and their competition. Here’s how several leaders feel about enterprise SaaS pricing. If your business has decided to put resources into attracting enterprise-level customers, there’s still the question of publishing your prices as part of your SaaS pricing strategy. Learn 7 pricing strategies that can help you grow your customer base, and maintain it! Get the PDF The dual sides of the ‘contact us’ debate These customers are willing to pay a steeper price for more users and more features, such as immediate access to ‘premium’ customer support through different channels, including phone, email, or a chat box. On the other hand, a high-touch enterprise plan will attract larger, more established businesses. However, this type of customer is more likely to be discouraged by a ‘contact us’ feature and is likely to pass you by to seek out a competitor with pricing clearly indicated on its website. This provides access to smaller customers, while also ensuring this customer type doesn’t over burden the resources in your customer service department. Their go-to for help will likely be your Frequently Asked Questions web page, with the option to email a help desk with questions. The size of your ideal customer will indicate what kind of SaaS pricing and features you’ll need to offer.Ī low-touch or self-service plan is one that will be more affordable but will give customers limited support. In other words, as a SaaS business, is your ideal customer just starting out or is it a large, well-established enterprise business? Are you hunting elephants, or is your offering more applicable to mice? The short answer to the publish/unpublished conundrum may lay in your ideal customer. And as SaaS businesses provide products that can be tailored to the specific needs of their customers, it stands to reason they should also have customized pricing options. There are different employee counts, different security needs, different user needs, etc. Of course, not all customers are created equal. Why is it some businesses opt not to publish an enterprise-level price, while others choose to be completely transparent and put everything on the table at every level? Determining your SaaS business’s target customer The only remaining things that differentiate between the two apps are special case scenarios. Most of the basic mind map features are there. I did download MindNode 6 and have been running it through for a couple of days now. iThoughts was further along the road and MindNode was just a babe in the woods at version 2.Īn aggressive development schedule has moved MindNode much closer to iThoughts in terms of having the main features in a mind map. I was faced with this choice a few years ago. iThoughts has the ability to work special categories of notes such as tasks with due-dates, resources (people in orgs), cost calculating nodes, and project progress (for nodes that have tasks).Īnyone else have experience with these two and if so, any thoughts on how they compare? I’d heard a lot of good things about MindNode and expected that after I tried it I’d be inclined to purchase but after my initial exploration I’m actually thinking I’d be better off sticking with iThoughts. An example, the project I’m mapping is a collaborative local history project which includes several small non-profits, various resources being digitized, a podcast and a website where the materials will be catalogued. With iThoughts there was more to learn and more that I could do. After an hour of using them I felt like I’d gotten a solid handle on how they each work (very similar) but also had the sense that I’d reached the limit of MindNode’s feature set. It’s got support for markdown in the notes for nodes, the ability to import a greater variety of objects, and far more export/sharing options. Also, two finger tap to undo is a nice touch and a feature I’m coming to like thanks to Procreate and the Affinity apps.īut iThoughts seems to be the more capable app. It’s also got newly announced support for second, external USB C monitors which might be nice for some. MindNode is better in the area of visual style with a couple of added features. I spent an hour with each app and came away with the impression that iThoughts is a more powerful app in almost every way. Yesterday I saw the new version of MindNode was released so I downloaded it for the free 2 week trial. As it happens I’ve got a new project coming up that would probably benefit from actually diving in with this kind of app. I’d previously purchased iThoughts and used it a little but my projects don’t often require that kind of app. |
